A COMMUNITY Foundation set up to help local charities has announced its first charitable funds.
One Community is a non-profit organisation established to manage donor funds and make grants to needy causes.
It is headed by Sir John Harman, 59, former leader of Kirklees Council and ex-chairman of the Environment Agency, who played a key role in the building of the Galpharm Stadium in Huddersfield.
Launched in May, One Community has now established three endowment funds, thanks to the generosity of well-known Huddersfield business leaders.
l The Ken Davy Fund, for the participation of young people in sport.
l The Longley Farm Fund which will support artistic and cultural activities in Holmfirth.
l The Brierley Fund, which will encourage new and existing companies to develop their business, created with a donation from John L Brierley Ltd.
Paul Johnson, gifts manager at One Community, said: “Announcing the funds is a big step forward for us.
“Our aims are to establish a thriving and successful community foundation for people of Kirklees, and this gives us a massive impetus to go forward and announce the formal application process next year.
“We hope that other businesses across Kirklees and generous benefactors will take note and follow in their footsteps.
“They can find out more about the organisation and be sufficiently enthused to join in.
“The beauty is it’s cause neutral, charities usually have to specify their aims. If you wanted to set up a fund about your interest in painting for example we could help you realise that.”
Jimmy Dickinson, managing director of Longley Farm, said: “This is a model which was tried in Calderdale and it really works.
“Rather than different people coming up with money, it’s a co-ordinated way of supporting community projects.
“I’ve made sure that ours should be focused in the Holme Valley.”
Ian Brierley, joint managing director of John L Brierley, said: “The reason we got involved is the aims were a great idea for the whole of Kirklees.
“The key thing is it’s very easy to come up with the obvious charities to give money to, but this way the funds can go to places which are not the automatic choice.
“In our case we were looking to help business and tailored it in particular to new business in the Huddersfield area.
“The foundation allows you to say ‘This is what I’m interested in’.
“I would certainly recommend it to other companies.”
The formal announcement of the grant application scheme will be made on Wednesday, March 2.
