This is how a new indoor bowling centre for Huddersfield could look.

Officials of Huddersfield Indoor Bowling Association have held several meetings with officers at the Huddersfield YMCA.

And artists’ impressions of what the proposed new centre could look like have been released.

It would be built alongside the main rugby pitch at the YMCA’s Laund Hill sports complex at Salendine Nook, subject to planning permission.

Bowlers claim it is the best news they have had in years.

The bowlers, who have played at Huddersfield Sports Centre since its opening more than 40 years ago, are to lose their home when the centre closes within weeks.

They had hoped to be included in the £36m Huddersfield Leisure Centre set to open next month at Springwood but were left reeling when councillors told them there was no space in the facility.

Kirklees Council have funded a feasibility study to look at a centre at Rastrick Bowling Club but Huddersfield bowlers are anxious to remain in the town.

The YMCA offered land at the Laund Hill complex and bowlers are optimistic together they can raise the expected £800,000 to build it.

Bowling Association secretary Damien Talbot said: “A number of very constructive meetings have taken place during late March and early April to review all aspects of design, construction, management and operation of the proposed facility.

“Project team structures have been reviewed and put in place resulting in a strong management team with the variety of the key skills necessary to readily undertake and successfully complete the project.

“Our early site investigations confirm no major civil engineering problems. The new building would house four rinks, which is what we estimate we need, as well as changing rooms and two viewing platforms for the adjoining rugby pitch

“We are getting close to being able to submit a planning application and we are urgently trying to seek a meeting with Kirklees Council, hoping to gain their support in this exciting project for the benefit of the Kirklees community.

“This is the best news bowlers have had for a long time”.
