THERE is only one way clubbing couple Jack and Jean Atkinson could celebrate their 65th wedding – with a trip to their favourite nightclub.

The Fixby couple lead the dance floor at some of the region’s top clubs despite both being aged 84.

And today they will celebrate 65 years of marriage and hit the dance floor to Jean’s favourite current song – Eminem’s Shake That Ass.

They wed in Edinburgh on June 25, 1945, just 15 days after they met.

They’ve lived around the world but are never happier when they’re on the dance floor.

Jean said: “I love the current music, anything with a beat I can dance to.

“My favourite at the moment is Eminem’s Shake That Ass and my old favourite is Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean – they always play those for me because they know I love them.”

The couple met on a Sunday in June 1945 on Princes Street in Edinburgh. The following day they had their first date before Mr Atkinson went to sea with the Royal Navy for five days.

He returned and they set their wedding date for ten days later.

The couple, who have lived in America and Canada, returned to Huddersfield, where Mr Atkinson is from, in 1980 and have been regulars at clubs ever since.

Jean added: “I asked him for a light, that was how we met. He got chatting to my friend and I to his friend.”

Jack added: “I suggested we swap and we’ve been together ever since.

“The secret to a happy marriage is to pick the right one first time and I certainly did that.”

They were often seen on the dance floor at Visage in Huddersfield until it closed down. They now go to Liquid/Maine Street in Halifax every Thursday and Rotherham’s Liquid and Envy, where they will celebrate tonight, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Jean, who makes all her clubbing clothes herself, will wear a fluorescent yellow outfit with matching yellow patent shoes.

She has three wardrobes of clothes she’s made herself and has only one rule – nothing black.

She added: “At one time there used to be seven clubs in Huddersfield but they all closed down so we go to Rotherham now. We enjoy the drive over and they’re really good to us there.”

She joked: “Jack’s got two left feet so I go off dancing with my toy boys. We’ve got more in common with the young people than we have with people our age.

“The young people are lovely to us – we get on great with them all.”

Jack added: “Age is just a number, while we’re healthy we’ll be out dancing.

“We’re too young to give up and we’re not ready for the knackers yard for a long time.”

To mark their 65th, the couple will be holding a raffle at the Rotherham club – they’ll give everyone through the doors a raffle ticket, draw ten out and each will win £100.

Jack, who runs their website, www.jacknjean.net, added: “It’s our way of saying thank you to the club and people.”

The couple have three children, Jack, Glen and Carol, who live in California and who are yet to go dancing with their parents.
