YOUNGSTERS have joined in the fight against a killer disease.

Fixby Primary School pupils have been planting crocus bulbs as part of the Rotary Club’s campaign against Polio.

The children did some hands on gardening with each one of the 90 year one and two pupils planting a handful of bulbs in front of the school in the shape of the school initials FPS.

The school received 1,000 crocus bulbs from John and Chris Philip who have led teams of volunteers to India to help the fight against polio.

The five and six-year-olds heard stories of slum children in Lucknow contracting polio resulting in paralysed legs and arms.

The purple flowers have been planted to signify the colour children’s fingers are painted when they have been immunised.

Deputy headteacher, Mr Goodall said: “This has been an exciting learning experience for the children.

“When they come to school next February they will see the letters FPS in a splash of purple. I’m sure it will remind them of our privileged life and make them mindful of the children in India.”
