THE FORMER site of a working men’s club could be redeveloped as flats.

Wates Living Space, of Leeds, hopes to build 26 flats on land off Rawthorpe Lane, the former site of Rawthorpe WMC.

The club closed in 2002. It was demolished after an arson attack in 2007.

The developer submitted plans to the council on June 9 for four two-storey and three-storey blocks of flats with parking spaces and landscaping.

The plan includes solar panels to minimise electricity bills.

A statement for Wates said: “There is a significant shortage of affordable housing across Kirklees. There are currently approximately 7,000 people waiting for a home.

“On average, people will wait two-and-a-half years to be housed. Across Kirklees, approximately 80% of this demand is for one and two-bedroom properties.

“The lack of new homes built over recent years and rising house prices have led to a growing affordability gap, which means that small households in particular cannot afford to purchase a property.

“10% of the homes in the project will be specifically designed to meet the particular needs of wheelchair users, thereby enabling tenants to achieve greater independence.”

Kirklees Council will decide on the application after a public consultation ends on July 23.
