A MOTHER of two is gearing up for her 12th marathon.
Mandy Ross, 45, of Flockton is running the New York Marathon in aid of an appeal close to her heart.
Her friend Helen Verity has a rare cancer called Myeloma, for which there is no cure.
Mrs Verity’s husband Gary formed a team of 14 runners to raise £500,000 for terminally ill patients.
Mandy, Gary and 12 others will run the 26 mile race on November 1.
For Mandy, who runs the Daisy Chain Day Nursery in Kirkburton, it is her second New York marathon.
She said: “I’ve known Gary and Helen for five years and when she was diagnosed with the cancer they became focused on helping people, so when Gary asked if I’d run the marathon it was something I wanted to do.
“Seeing Helen become more poorly makes it all the more important to raise as much as we can.”
She will be cheered on during the race by children Ellis, 18, and Hollie, 17.
Under the team ‘Running for Helen’ they will raise the money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
If the team raise £500,000 it will provide 25,000 hours of nursing care for terminally ill patients.
Gary said: “I am overwhelmed that my friends and business colleagues have agreed to undertake this challenge in celebration of my wonderful wife.”
