A new community centre is to be opened in Flockton.
Members of Flockton First, based at St James the Great Church on Barnsley Road, are behind the plan.
They are concerned that no other such space exists in the village any more.
They hope that by transforming the back half of the church into a centre, they will create a hub for all the villagers.
One of those spearheading the scheme is Angela Griffith, the group’s lead fundraiser and church organist, who hopes that the centre will be up and running by this Christmas.
She said: “At the moment there are just no community facilities at all.
“The last such space we had, at the Zion Chapel on Barnsley Road, closed about five years ago and nothing has been turned into a similar space since.”
Flockton First, which is formed of church members and members of the Parents and Tiddlers group, decided to begin a campaign to raise money to create a space within the building.
“So far we have raised £140,000 through grants and donations," added Angela.
“The Richard Carter Charity, Kirklees Council, Lottery’s Awards for All and WREN Landfill have given us very generous amounts and we’re thankful to everyone who has helped us already.
“We would like to raise £150,000 but have organised lots of upcoming events so are confident they will help us reach the total.
“We’ve already cleared out the back half of the church, which was full of pews that were not getting used and work in the building is expected to start in the summer holidays.
“This will see the creation of a kitchen, toilets, mezzanine floor space and a big folding screen to pull across and separate the community centre from the front part.”
The church now wants people interested in hosting clubs and groups at the new centre to come to an open weekend from June 5 to 7.
“We think that the centre will make a big difference to the village by bringing everyone together and we really want people to come and have a look and see if they could run some sort of community activity here”, said Angela.
The open weekend will run from 6pm to 9pm on June 5, 10pm to 4pm on June 6 and 2pm to 5pm on June 7 and refreshments will be provided.
Other fundraising events due to take include the Parents and Tiddlers group toy sale on June 25 from 3.30pm and a youth group fun day in the summer, the date of which has not yet been confirmed.
