FIREFIGHTERS stopped water flooding into flats after a water main burst.

A coupling blew off the end of the main which goes into Marlborough Flats on St Mary's Gate in the centre of Elland just before 6pm yesterday evening.

Water poured into the foyer and got in the lift shaft.

Sub-officer Pete Rushby, of Elland fire station, said: "We used salvage sheets to stop the water from getting into the ground-floor flats.

"But the electrics and water to the entire block had to be shut off."

Firefighters were there for almost 90 minutes.
