COUNCIL engineers remained on alert last night as they battled to prevent more floods in Kirkburton.

They installed pumping equipment at Church Green, fearing a repeat of the problems which saw filthy water almost six feet deep pour through homes.

Thankfully, the problems which hit residents on Tuesday night - forcing them to leave their homes - were not repeated.

Council staff were on site all yesterday, helping residents clean up after the deluge.

They are desperately trying to discover how the quiet back lane became a raging torrent.

Council officials also helped residents fill in details for insurance claims after their homes, furnishings and possessions were wrecked.

Residents have blamed council work for causing the problems

A spokesman for Kirk- lees Highways Service said:

"We have been working on a main culvert running beneath the road, which had major structural problems, but we are not yet sure what caused Tuesday's problems.

"It is a very deep culvert and whether or not it was blocked is something we need to establish."
