IT’S still blooming lovely in Huddersfield!

It may be autumn, but Kirklees Council’s floral displays throughout Huddersfield and Dewsbury think it’s still summer and are continuing to bloom and bloom.

Normally by this time of year the containers and hanging baskets are past their best.

It would have been a time for the council’s and Parks and Open Spaces staff to remove them before they get too straggly.

But this summer’s perfect growing conditions – sunshine and occasional rain – and the current mild spell which has seen an Indian summer hit the town, means tens of thousands of plants are still blooming.

All were grown by the Kirklees Nursery staff and their efforts, coupled with the weather combinations, have combined to keep the plants looking their best for much longer than usual.

Parks and Open Spaces operations manager Duncan Henderson said: “This has been our best season yet!

“The recent glorious weather has resulted in the displays extending into autumn and all are resplendent with abundant flowing growth and colour.

“The new introductions of barrier planters and three-tier floral towers this summer are causing quite a stir and a lot of appreciation.

“We are hoping to keep the displays going as long as possible. Removing them for the winter is expected to cause some disappointment.”

He added that his staff were enjoying the chance to improve the area’s public spaces with floral colour.

Money has been made available through various area committees to improve town and village centres.

More funding has come from Kirklees in Bloom and other local initiatives which has have meant more floral displays than ever before in Kirklees.

This year the Kirklees Nursery at Bradley produced some 45,000 plants.

They were used to plant out around 1,700 plant containers such as hanging baskets, troughs, three-tier planters, barrels and barrier planters.
