And with England taking to the field in Frankfurt on Thursday against Trinidad and Tobago, flag fervour has reached epidemic proportions.

Cars, houses, pubs, churches and public buildings are all flying the flag of St George.

And many pubs and shops are battling to outdo each other in the supporter stakes.

Kirklees Council's new Tory-led regime led the way last month when they pledged to fly the flag above civic buildings on match days.

But it seems everyone else is more than happy to be captured with their national pride on show.

The millions of England flags on display across the country to mark the first round of the World Cup point to the creation of a new national identity, an academic said today.

The red cross on a white background can be seen fluttering from cars across the nation, while houses, pubs, faces and even a sheep have been painted in the country's colours.

Even Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell is flying the flag from her official car, it has emerged.

But university sociologist Dr Anthony King said flying the flag was about more than just supporting David Beckham and his World Cup hopefuls.

Dr King said the flags, as well as factors like major companies' sponsorship, created "a new national community with social bonds springing from sport."
