A SPORTS team is well on its way to becoming top dog.

Huddersfield’s first flyball club finished third in a major competition.

The sport involves a relay race of two teams of four dogs.

Each canine must jump four hurdles along a 51ft course, retrieve a tennis ball from a box and return over the hurdles. When one dog finishes the next one begins.

The first team to get all four dogs over the line without errors wins.

Sheepridge couple Keith and Adele Marshall set up the Doghouse Flyball Club last year.

Keith said: “It’s the only team sport for dogs.

“It’s fast, it’s furious and it’s fun.”

The club, which now has 12 members, came third out of 30 in the Tudor Championship this summer. The competition was held in Cheshire and Selby over four bank holiday weekends.

Keith said: “We didn’t expect to finish so high. It’s pretty good for a club in its first season.”

The club is running a six-week introductory course at the Deighton Centre from October 21.
