Flytipping is blighting parts of Mirfield.

And a local councillor has warned: “Things will get worse.”

Kirklees councillor Martyn Bolt, who is campaigning for tougher efforts to stop flytipping, is calling for tougher measures against fly tippers.

He has warned the scale of the problem can clearly be seen adjacent to the main Huddersfield to Leeds railway line through Mirfield.

His warning comes only days after he highlighted fears to Kirklees’ ruling Labour cabinet.

Clr Bolt, a former Cabinet member for environmental issues at the council, visited a former rail siding off Hurst Lane, after many complaints from local people.

He was devastated to find fridge and freezer carcasses, asbestos and builders rubble on the land stretching over about half a mile.

Clr Bolt said: “It was a real mess, with fridges all over the place with the metal stripped off.

“I also saw signs of fires, possibly from burning wire casings and I am worried that this could also lead to wire theft from the rail way

“My visit to the site came just hours after I attended the Kirklees cabinet meeting to ask that a new policy by the council, charging for the removal of such items of £20 per item, be subject to a review period after implementation, to see if it did lead to a rise in incidents of fly tipping

“That’s a major worry not just for Mirfield but for other areas.

“ Clearly the isolated location of this particular site and the open access means that fly tippers have circulated this information.

“We need immediate action to stop access, consider future monitoring and policing and of course a clean-up of the existing material”

Clr Bolt is now working with police, the council, the Environment Agency, Network Rail and local businesses to try and sort out the problem.

The Kirklees decision means DIY fans and gardeners will no longer be able to dump soil, rubble and plasterboard at Kirklees tips.

The council has approved cuts to its waste and street cleaning policy and said it will no longer take the above items for free.

The changes to what can be taken to tips are part of an overall cut of £1.2m from the street cleaning and refuse budget.
