Councillors deferred a football team’s bid for a new clubhouse to give them time to re-think the plans.

Hepworth United wanted a new clubhouse on the playing field at Far Lane, Hepworth, plus alter the car park and realign the pitches.

But some 188 people opposed the plan, with 47 in support, and the six councillors on the Strategic Planning Committee weren’t best pleased with it either.

Clr Paul Kane questioned if they’d demonstrated the “very special circumstances” for building in the greenbelt and said: “It’s not in keeping with the surrounding area, it’s one big clubhouse.”

After hearing of former plans for a new club near Thongsbridge, Clr Steve Hall, chair of the committee, moved deferral to give Hepworth United time to re-think their plans and work with local councillors.
