One of Huddersfield town centre’s most iconic buildings has been listed for sale.

The old Co-operative building on New Street is on the market, with price on application.

Kirklees Council is selling the key asset with expressions of interest sought from developers.

The council acquired the building some years ago as part of plans for a major development off Queensgate.

The sale particulars describe the 25,000 sq ft five-storey building as a “landmark town centre building” with redevelopment potential, subject to planning permission.

It adds: “A substantial landmark building originally opened as a Co-op Departmental Store in 1936 and latterly used as a nightclub until its closure in 2004.

“The building has an extensive window display frontage to New Street and a return frontage onto the ring road.

“The building requires comprehensive renovation or possible re-development and offers potential for a wide variety of uses (subject to planning approval) to compliment its prominent town centre position.”

It adds that planning permission was granted in 2000 for a Wetherspoons, which indicates suitability to developers for further change of use bids.

Last year Kirklees Council gave the Examiner a tour of the building, when workers were on site carrying out surveys to assess what condition the Co-op was in.

Built in 1936 and officially opened a year later, its striking facade remains and much of the interior of the former Heaven and Hell nightclub remains, along with art deco-style windows.

The views from the upper floors offer views of modern architecture of the nearby Kirklees College and the iconic Castle Hill in the distance.

It is among a number of key sites in and around the town centre up for sale. The former Kirklees College building was recently sold, plus the old sports centre site in Southgate is back on the market after Tesco backtracked on building a new store.
