A VILLAGE school tied its children together – but all for a good cause.

Pupils of Upper Denby First School spent the day attached to a partner to raise money for a little Ethiopian girl.

Six-year-old Hawa is being sponsored by the school through the charity Save the Children.

And the school, which has just 38 pupils, spent the day raising cash to help her.

Headteacher Lesley Butcher said tying the children together aimed to help them co-operate with each other.

She said: “They will have to compromise and communicate with each other. If one wants to go one way and the other wants to go another, they will have to talk things over and decide which direction to take.”

Sixteen children took part in the event with 22 children from the school’s junior class taking part in a 12-mile sponsored bike ride along a disused railway route.

The sponsorship started after one of the school’s part-time teachers, Jenny Holmes, left in March to spend two years teaching English in Ethiopia with the charity Voluntary Service Overseas.

Mrs Butcher said: “We have been talking a lot about Africa and poverty and lack of water and the children were so touched by what they heard that they wanted to do something about it.”

The money which they raise will help pay for Hawa’s education, food, clothing and also give some support to the village in which she lives.

Mrs Holmes is sending regular emails to the school to let them know about how Hawa is getting on. The school aims to do sponsored events each year to raise money for Hawa.
