A FORMER Greenhead High School deputy head is celebrating her 100th birthday today.

Nancy Mason, of Slaithwaite, originally came to Huddersfield in 1947 and became a physics teacher at Holme Valley Grammar School alongside her brother-in-law the late Edwin Fawcett.

In 1954 she was appointed head of physics at Greenhead HIgh School where her sister the late Peggy Fawcett taught.

Her niece Anne Wharton said: “She progressed to become deputy head and was instrumental in the development of a new science block.

“When the headmistress, Miss Owen retired, she became acting head for the period before it was made a sixth form college.”

Anne said that following her retirement in 1972 Miss Mason liked to play tennis, bowls, walk, travel with friends and keep in touch with both the Old Girls’ Association and University Women’s Club.

Her family are niece Anne and nephews Michael and John and their 10 children.

Miss Mason will be celebrating today with family and friends at Meadow Court Care Home, Slaithwaite, where she has lived for the past 10 years.
