A SENIOR Muslim leader has visited Huddersfield.

Dr Iftikhar Ayaz spoke to 150 people at Lower Fitzwilliam Street Mosque last night.

The former national president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association said: “I believe that the Muslim community in Huddersfield has a serious responsibility to promote Islam in its pristine purity.”

Dr Ayaz was president of the group from 1997 to 2001. He is the association’s secretary for external affairs and was given an OBE in 1998.

Dr Ayaz said: “Muslims should show an open attitude to their own religion and other religions.”

He added that he was concerned about exam results of Muslim children. He said: “Muslim youth are not doing as well as other communities. Within some Muslim communities there’s not as much enthusiasm about teaching girls as there should be according to the teachings of Islam.”

Dr Ayaz held a question and answer session with more than 150 AMA members at the mosque.

He also visited the Examiner office along with Huddersfield president Munir Ahmed and external affairs secretary Fatih ul-Haq.
