SHE is running for her hero – who just happens to be her dad.
Katherine McFadzean is hitting the road in the Great North Run to raise money for heart charity Heart Research UK to help her father.
Former Huddersfield police sergeant and recipient of the Queen’s Police medal John McFadzean is awaiting critical heart surgery.
And his daughter is going on the run to raise money for vital research into his condition and the heart defects that killed her grandparents.
The 26-year-old has always looked up to her dad – not just for his prowess in the police force but his keen athleticism.
As president of the Holmfirth Harriers, John takes fitness very seriously and was left devastated six months ago, when doctors told him he could no longer run.
The 56-year-old has been allowed to continue coaching athletics but after his surgery later this year, he is set to be bed-bound for about two months.
Sadly, heart problems are deep-rooted in the McFadzean family history.
John’s father died when he was very young after suffering from an undetected heart condition.
His mum remarried, and now the man, that Katherine calls grandad is also set to have a heart pacemaker fitted.
On the other side of the family, Katherine’s other grandfather – her mum Jayne’s dad – died aged 61, from a heart attack.
He was Eric Davison, head of the Newspaper Association in Huddersfield.
Katherine, who works as a PCSO in Barnsley said: “My dad has always been my hero, after he did so well in the police force.
“I would love to one day be working at Huddersfield police station on the beat that my dad did.
“I love to run and I am also a member of the Holmfirth Harriers.
“Having done half-marathons before, this race feels much more important, it is really quite special.
“The cause is so close to my family and I want to do what I can to raise money for research into heart disease.
“Coaching means everything to dad, since he retired from the force last year.
“He is so fit and used to go to the gym every day. I want to see him be able to do all the things he loves.”
John, who spent 35 years as an officer, is awaiting an operation to correct aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve and is expected to go in for surgery later on this year.
Katherine has set a target of £500 and hopes to exceed that figure. To support Katherine visit www.justgiving.com/katherine-mcFadzean0
