THEY are two of the most outlandish figures in music.

Now former Huddersfield student Justin Hawkins is to team up with pop icon Lady Gaga.

She has announced two UK dates – when she will be supported by glam rockers The Darkness – as part of her world tour.

Famous for donning outrageous catsuits, the reformed band led by Hawkins will be performing on the European leg of the tour, the Born This Way Ball.

Best known for the track I Believe In A Thing Called Love, The Darkness got back together in 2011, five years after splitting up.

They won three Brit Awards in 2004 and had five top 10 hits but split in 2006 when frontman Hawkins, who later revealed he had fought a secret battle with chronic drug addiction and alcoholism, quit.

The king of the catsuits – who studied music technology at the former Huddersfield Technical College – wowed crowds as much with his skin-tight outfits and huge hair as he did with his falsetto vocals.

For a while the singer lived the rock star dream as The Darkness’s 2003 debut album Permission To Land sold over two million copies and won them three Brit awards.

With hits including I Believe In A Thing Called Love, Love Is Only A Feeling and even a Christmas single it appeared The Darkness could do no wrong. Hawkins even got his own waxwork in Madame Tussaud’s.

But, like so many bands, they fell victim to the curse of ‘that difficult second album’ and their follow-up effort failed to win over fans in 2005.

Their meteoric rise was followed by the usual rock and roll fall from grace when Hawkins resigned from the band in 2006.

The Darkness subsequently split and Hawkins spent a month-long rehab spell in The Priory.

He admitted spending £150,000 in three years on cocaine and at one stage said he was taking ecstasy every day.

Lady Gaga will sing tracks from her most recent album Born This Way, as well as previous releases The Fame and The Fame Monster.

“The Haus of Gaga and I have worked for months conceiving a spectacular stage,” she said of her design team.

“The Born This Way Ball is an electro-metal pop-opera, the tale of the beginning, the genesis of the kingdom of fame. How we were birthed and how we will die celebrating.”

The eccentric star will be performing at London’s Twickenham Stadium on September 8 this year and at Manchester Arena on September 11.

The worldwide tour is Lady Gaga’s first since the release of Born This Way last year, which sold nearly six million copies.
