Mrs Mabel Brooke, 92, died suddenly in the Royal Infirmary.

Mrs Brooke - the widow of former Alderman Kenneth Brooke - was Mayoress of the old Huddersfield Borough Council in 1969/70.

She enjoyed her year in office, especially the charity work. She continued to be a hard worker for charitable causes for many years.

Mrs Brooke was born in Lindley in 1913, but spent her early years in Berry Brow.

She married Mr Brooke, a director of builders J B Brooke and Sons, at Holy Trinity Church, Huddersfield, in 1937.

The couple lived in Almondbury, Gledholt and Brockholes before retiring to St Annes. When Mr Brooke died in 1974 she returned to Almondbury to be near her family.

Mrs Brooke was a member of the RNLI, Huddersfield Luncheon Club and Huddersfield Flower Club.

In her younger days she was a dancer in local amateur shows.

In her latter years, she was a staunch supporter of Kirkwood Hospice at Dalton and of the Almondbury Community Project.

She and her husband were involved in developing Huddersfield's twinning links with Besancon in France.

Mr Brooke was instrumental in steering through the legislation to get the Scammonden dam and bridge built.

He and his wife were guests when the Queen opened it.

Mrs Brooke leaves four children - Marcus, Angela, Helen and Tim - 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
