A woman of 81 died from head injuries after a fall, a Huddersfield inquest heard.

Mary Ashton, of Meltham, was in the town centre with a friend when she tripped on the steps at the parish church.

She was knocked unconscious when her head hit the steps. At the Royal Infirmary a CT scan revealed fracturing and massive bleeding to her brain.

She never regained consciousness. The inquest heard that Ms Ashton had suffered from heart problems and had recently had a pacemaker fitted.

Coroner Roger Whittaker recorded a verdict of accidental death, saying it was likely that the former nurse, who lived alone, had had a heart attack first.
