A FORMER postman who quit his job because he didn’t like the changes to his route was found hanged at his Almondbury home, a coroner heard.

Andrew Martin Lee, 54, was found hanged from his bed frame, on February 2 this year, the inquest at Kirklees Magistrates heard.

Mr Lee, a former merchant navy officer of 20 years, had signed up to the post office when he returned.

His father John said in his statement read to the inquest that his son, who lived at Northgate with him and his wife Audrey, had been a postman for about 15 years.

He told the inquest Andrew had left the Post Office because he didn’t like the management changes and wanted to spend more time at home, as his father was undergoing kidney dialysis.

He told the court Andrew was acting normally and had gone to bed as usual on February 5.

But it was not until the following morning that his mother Audrey, discovered him in his bedroom.

Coroner Prof Paul Marks recorded a verdict that Mr Lee intended to kill himself.

He expressed his deepest sympathy to Mr Lee’s father John and wife Audrey and wished him well with his kidney treatment.

Mr Lee told the Examiner after the inquest: “Andrew left the Post Office due to cuts and management wanted to change his routes.

“He liked doing Lepton which he had done for many years. He knew people on the route and would do his best to get out quickly to people with ‘signed for’ post before they went out to work.

“The whole thing was being turned on its head and so he left.

“He was drinking too much but we just put it down to his life in the merchant navy.

“We did want him to cut down.”
