A town centre bar could potentially re-open - for 20 hours a day, seven days a week.

A bid has been made for a new venture at the former Varsity bar on Zetland Street with a licence sought from 8am until 4am daily.

The application has been made by Sheffield company Forum Cafe Bars for the venue at 24 Zetland Street, once the home to Varsity.

Council papers show the company wants a premises licence to cover the supply of alcohol and music from 8am until 4am every day.

Kirklees councillors on the Licensing Panel will be asked to rule on the plans when they meet on Monday at Huddersfield Town Hall at 10am.

But the extended opening hours bid has been met by objections from students and their landlords.

Aaron Mellor, landlord of the neighbouring Dogma Pads, writes: “We have 13 separate student flats here that generate significant rental income.

“We are very concerned that students will simply not wish to rent next door to premises open until 4am every night.

“This is an extremely big bar and whilst tolerated while positioned as a pub, to move to a 4am bar is a gigantic step too far.”

He’s called for opening no later than 2am in line with the former pub and for music to be turned down after midnight which the Varsity did.

And Mr Mellor says he has consent to object on behalf of the 13 students living in the adjoining flats.

Two of the tenants in the flats also lodged official objections, with Matthew Radcliffe describing the move as “totally unacceptable” and Levi Cheetham saying it will affect her studies.

The Varsity pub closed its doors in December when its parent company went into administration and the venue has been empty since.
