MOORLAND fans and workers met one last time in a five-year project to improve moorland management.

The Marsden Moor Project was set up five years ago by The Heather Trust, which was commissioned to run the scheme for the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Marsden Moor was chosen as one of four sites in Britain to hold regular demonstration events.

The aim was to educate people about how moorland management works and what more needs to be done.

Those who attended included representatives of the National Trust, the Peak District National Park, farmers, land agents, the Rural Development Service, gamekeepers and English Nature.

After a presentation and discussion at the Hey Green Hotel in Marsden,

the group braved heavy rain to venture on to the southern part of Marsden Moor, which is in the Peak District national park.

They viewed areas where work has been done during the project.

Simon Thorp, director of The Heather Trust, said: "The soaking did not dampen the enthusiasm for the work. The Heather Trust has appreciated enormously the support we have received while working in the Peak District on this project.

"We hope we can be funded to maintain the momentum that has developed."
