FIRE crews battled for hours to halt a blaze which swept through a stack of timber in Mirfield.
Crews from Mirfield and Dewsbury spent more than four hours at the site of the former Pattersons Tankers depot off Wood End Road, Lower Hopton, where a massive stack of logs and uncut timber was stored.
And they returned in the early hours of this morning to check that the blaze was finally out.
A brigade spokesman said: “It was a difficult job, as firefighters had to climb on to the stack to get at the deep-seated fire and the timber was very unsteady.
“There was also a big problem getting water to the site. We had to use a hydrant in Wood End Road and run every length of hose we had on three fire engines to reach the yard”.
The alarm was raised shortly after 6.30pm and the fire crews were at the scene until 11pm.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
