A TEENAGE boy died after playing in a waterfall with friends, police said today.

The 13-year-old was playing in the waterfall in the Haughton Green area of Tameside, Greater Manchester, last night when he fell into the River Tame.

The youngster did not resurface and his body was pulled from the water about four hours later.

Greater Manchester Police are currently trying to establish whether his death was suspicious.

A force spokesman said: "At about 8pm on Thursday, police were called to Gibraltar Lane in the Haughton Green area of Tameside, following reports that a 13-year-old boy had been playing with friends and had jumped into the River Tame and not resurfaced.

"Fire crews, ambulance crews, police officers and the GMP underwater search team searched the area, and shortly after midnight a body was recovered from the river.

"Enquiries are continuing."

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said three fire engines and a rescue boat attended the scene last night.

He said: "We got a call at 8.08pm and were there until just before 1am.

"In total we had three fire engines and an inshore rescue boat in attendance and we continued searching until a body was found by police divers."

The spokesman said he did not know how many children had been playing at the waterfall.
