A SUPERMARKET is full of the patter of tiny feet after four staff members became grandmothers for the first time.

And workers at the Sainsbury’s Market Street store reckon there’s something in the water – as they’ve never seen such a baby boom before!

The store has been filled with baby talk since the women discovered their children or their partners wereexpecting

It all kicked off last April when Dawn Curry, who works in the frozen food department, broke the news that her son Christopher’s partner Lauren was pregnant.

Ellie Grace was born on November 1, weighing 71b 1½oz.

Then it was cashier Michelle Polczynski’s turn for the good news.

The Brighouse woman’s son Craig and partner Gemma welcomed baby son Daniel Craig weeks later, on November 18, weighing 5lbs 15oz.

Next to become grandma was Val Riley, from Dalton, who works in dry goods.

Her daughter Dawn and partner Neil had baby Scarlette Holly on Christmas Day, weighing in at 6lbs and 14oz.

The last to announce a new family member was customer service worker Anita Kelly, from Leeds Road.

Her daughter Sarah and partner Dave had Poppie Jane on January 3, weighing 6lbs 12oz.

The new arrivals have proven something of a distraction for the store’s predominantly female workforce, who are now cooing over the tots on their store visits.

Mary Kitchen, the store’s public relations officer, said that in her 13 years she had never seen such a baby boom there.

She said: “It’s been a very exciting time, although I think some of our male colleagues are sick of all the baby talk!

“We have another colleague who became a grandma in June so she started the whole thing off.

“But we couldn’t believe it when one baby kept getting announced after another.

“There’s been a real buzz about the place as we’ve been waiting for the babies to be born – we’ve even made some money for charity by getting colleagues to guess their weight and sex.

“It’s lovely that they’re all close in age. We’re like a little family in this store and hopefully they will become friends.”

The staff raised around £100 for The Joseph Salmon Trust through their baby guessing competition.

New grandma Dawn, from Lowerhouses, said: “It’s been an lovely time, quite emotional for all the grandmas.

“We’re all very close and have been showing each other scans and sharing tips like what baby clothes have just gone in the sale.”
