A MAN who was seriously injured in a gang attack remains critically ill in hospital.

The 29-year-old was taken to hospital after being brutally assaulted by several people outside a bed factory in Birkby on Tuesday evening.

He was still fighting for life last night at Leeds General Infirmary after surgery on major head injuries.

West Yorkshire Police were yesterday given more time to question four people over the incident, which happened in the yard of Deluxe Beds, at the junction of Blacker Road and Kingcliffe Road, at about 8.30pm.

The three youths, aged 15, 16 and 17, and a 30-year-old man, were still being questioned by detectives today.

Officers were still trying to establish a motive for the attack, how many people were involved and whether any weapons were used.

Senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Steve Payne said: “We are still appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“Anyone with information that may help our inquiry should contact us immediately.”

The victim is of Polish origin but was living locally.

Anyone with information should contact Huddersfield police via 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555111.
