Police are investigating another waterways tragedy in Kirklees.

A man’s body has been found in the River Calder in Dewsbury.

The death is the FOURTH in rivers and canals in the area in little over three weeks but there are no links between any of the deaths.

Police cars and ambulances were called to the scene on a playing fields complex between Sands Lane and Mill Street East, close to the centre of Dewsbury and a nearby railway line.

Officers from West Yorkshire Fire Service’s Technical Rescue Unit based at Cleckheaton Fire Station and Yorkshire Ambulance Service’s specialist HART unit used an inflatable dinghy to receover the body.

One man who worked nearby said he had seen a man erecting a flimsy, purple tent last Wednesday but it is unclear if the deceased had been sleeping in it during the bitterly-cold weather of late.

Police taped off the scene for several hundred yards along the river while enquiries were conducted and the tape was taken down at 3.37pm.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police were called to Sands Lane in Dewsbury at 11.37am today to a report that a body had been seen in water there.

But they have still to formally identify him detectives said.

There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances regarding his death.

The discovery was made in the River Calder between Mirfield and Cooper Bridge by a member of the public. And earlier this month, the canals in the area claimed two lives.

A Huddersfield teenager was found dead in the Huddersfield Broad Canal at Vine Street, Hillhouse, on March 17.

He was teenager Hamza Amer, 19, who was recovered from canal Street , after being spotted by a member of the public.

Mr Amer, who only turned 19 in November, was from Springfield Avenue in Batley.

A 77-year-old man died on March 23 despite being rescued from the Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal at Thornhill Lees , close to the Slaithwaite Road bridge.

Meanwhile, detectives are still trying to identify a man found dead at Ravensthorpe on Monday.

His body was discovered in a wooded area close to the Calder and Hebble Canal.

It is thought he had been there for some considerable time.

Police said the man was aged between 30 and 50 and was wearing cargo shorts and a T-shirt.

His death is being treated as “unexplained”.

A police spokesman said the inquiry was still ongoing and officers are awaiting more forensic test results.
