FRAUDSTERS have used dozens of blue badges belonging to disabled people who have died.

Kirklees Council revealed last night it has seized 75 badges which were being used illegally.

The frauds are believed to be worth £37,000.

The council is also taking action against 13 people for alleged fraudulent housing benefit and council tax benefit claims worth £115,000.

Kirklees has worked with the Department for Work and Pensions and the Audit Commission to track down fraudsters using data matching techniques.

The council’s Cabinet member for revenues and benefits Clr Shabir Pandor said: “Those who try to cheat the system are effectively stealing from every member of the community, putting those in genuine need most at risk.

“By working with our partner organisations we are providing an effective and efficient public service.

By comparing our records, in accordance with government legislation, we are making life increasingly difficult for those trying to con benefit systems.”
