IT’S taken 20 years – but former bonny baby Freddie Stubbins has proved he has the brains to match his winning smile.

Freddie was under two years-old when his cheeky grin captured the hearts of Examiner readers who voted him their Baby of the Year in 1990.

Now aged 21, the Emley man’s mum is having to decide which picture takes pride of place at home after he was recognised by another historic Huddersfield institution.

Freddie posed in his gown and cap as he graduated from Huddersfield University.

His mum, Christine, said: “I was proud when he was Baby of the Year, but I think getting his degree is just a little bit bigger.

“I was so proud I could have burst at his graduation ceremony.

“The Baby of the Year picture was a lovely one. I think the graduation picture will have to go next to it.”

Freddie, of Fox Close, studied chemistry and chemical engineering for four years.

He graduated with a 2:1 and is now planning to do a masters degree, followed by a PhD, at Leeds University.

He said: “I don’t remember anything about the Baby of the Year thing. Obviously I was really proud to graduate with a decent degree.

“I loved university and I’m planning on being a student for a bit longer.”
