CHRISTMAS shoppers can benefit from free parking in Huddersfield town centre.

Kirklees Council announced the move yesterday in an attempt to boost trading.

Parking – both on-street and in council-run car parks – will be free from 4pm on Thursdays from November 19 until December 24 and all day on Sundays from November 22 until December 20.

Parking is also free on Bank Holidays meaning there will be no charges on Monday, December 28 or New Year’s Day.

Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan thinks the move will boost town centre businesses.

He said: “Free parking offers real help to residents and traders alike and shows our commitment to tackling the effects of the recession.

“We want all our shopping areas to be attractive, exciting and easily accessible. Huddersfield has so much to offer all year round, but of course the Christmas trade can be especially important.

“There’s lots going on over the next few weeks and the free parking on Thursdays and Sundays will provide an even bigger incentive to come along and join the festive fun.”

Steven Pollitt, chairman of the Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership, added: “This is a real boost for the town centre and free parking will encourage people to come to Huddersfield.”
