It will be free to park all day every Saturday until Christmas in the council-owned car parks in Victoria Street, High Street, Cross Hills and Mulcture Hall Road. The usual tariff of 50p an hour or £1 all day will not be applied.
Calderdale Council’s Director for Economy and Environment, Ian Gray said: “By introducing free all day Saturday parking in our car parks, shoppers don’t need to worry about exceeding the time limits. They can stay as long as they want.”
Although on-street parking charges in Halifax town centre were lifted on 8 October 2014 after it became clear that the Council’s traffic regulation order (TRO) cannot be legally enforced, charges are still in place in the Council’s car parks.
A temporary TRO, which came into force on November 7 has allowed the council to enforce time limits on parking bays. This has re-introduced short stay on-street parking in Halifax town centre, limiting stays to one or two hours.
Drivers will need to check the on-street signs to make sure that they do not exceed the time limits.
On-street parking charges in Halifax town centre will continue to be suspended until a permanent TRO is introduced early in the New Year.
