ELDERLY and vulnerable people can get help to improve the safety of their homes.

The Examiner revealed yesterday that 320 Kirklees homes were burgled in the past year by thieves who forced open cheap euro-profile locks on uPVC doors which cost just 37p to manufacture.

Now the manager of a council-backed agency aimed at helping elderly people remain in their own homes said it was a growing concern.

Cheryl Armstrong, of Slaithwaite-based Anchor Staying Put, said she had met with West Yorkshire Police who revealed the security flaw.

Now the Kirklees agency has been given funding to replace the locks on the homes of people aged over 60 and vulnerable people of any age.

And many people can get the security work done for free.

She said: “For many over 60s and vulnerable people of all ages we will replace these locks with something much safer for free.

“We’ll also carry out a security survey and if they need safety chains or window locks then we’ll do that as well.”
