SHOPPERS will benefit from a free bus this Christmas.

The Cabinet approved £105,000 for a free town bus in Dewsbury, similar to the service which has run in Huddersfield for the last two years.

The new service will start on December 12 and run every 10 to 12 minutes.

Two buses operating the service will call at the bus station, train station, Dewsbury Market, Victoria Medical Centre, the sports centre and Sainsbury’s.

The service will run from 7.30am to 6.30pm on Mondays to Fridays and 8.30am to 5pm on Saturdays.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet yesterday approved funding for a six-month trial. Kirklees aims to get eight passengers per trip.

Cabinet member for highways Clr David Sheard said: “Let’s get this up-and-running and hope it works as well in Dewsbury as it does in other towns.”
