THE Freemasons have given £30,000 to Highbury School in Rastrick – boosting a fundraising campaign to revamp its hydrotherapy pool.
The school wants to raise £250,000 to upgrade the pool including extending the single changing room into two rooms and installing more efficient equipment, including new hoists and specialist changing beds.
Pupils rely on their special pool for hydrotherapy and exercise.
Assistant headteacher Nicky Moorman says the pool is crucial for both the youngsters and the community.
She said: “Ordinary swimming pools are too cold for them. It’s also used by Woodbank school and adults with learning difficulties.’’
The ageing pool, built in the early 1980s, is costing a fortune to run and could force the school to close it.
She added: “The economics of heating and running a pool are shooting up.
“The actual fabric of the building isn’t up to modern standards and the machinery that heats it is at the end of its natural working life.
“We are at the point where we think the economics of repairing it aren’t viable anymore.”
