A WINTER crackdown aimed at freezing criminal activity has started.

Hundreds of police across West Yorkshire are this week targeting known offenders and trying to catch those responsible for priority crimes including robbery, burglary and vehicle crime.

It is part of a rolling campaign during the winter months.

A similar campaign last year led to 1,500 arrests and police chiefs are hoping for a similar tally this time.

This week will involve:

* Specialist teams targeting individuals suspected of being involved in crime, particularly burglary, drugs and firearms offences.

* Increased patrols in crime hot-spot areas to reduce criminal opportunities.

* Working alongside local authorities, the DVLA and the Vehicle Inspectorate as part of an intelligence-led drive against organised crime and car theft.

* Roadside Automatic Number Plate Recognition checks will be used to identify and arrest offenders. Checkpoints have been placed throughout the region to curb the freedom and movement of criminals.

Det Chief Insp John Gilbody, who is leading the campaign, said: "This week of action demonstrates the extent of the force's commitment to tackling priority crime.

"Every division will be working together to restrict as much criminal activity and movement as physically possible.

"Maintaining a full week of activity at this level is a huge undertaking, but we're determined to ruin any plans West Yorkshire's criminals may have this Christmas."

Target's Chief Inspector, Keith Boughen, said: "This week marks the first phase of this year's Winter Crime Crackdown.

"We are relentless in our pursuit of prolific offenders and will co-ordinate many more operations this season and well into the New Year."
