A LORRY driver had to be treated in hospital last night after arsonists torched the vehicle he was sleeping in.

The man – in his 50s – was asleep in the cab of his lorry parked on Grove Street, Brighouse, when he was woken by smoke at around 11.30pm.

He managed to escape before the flames engulfed his vehicle.

The fire also spread to two other lorries parked nearby.

Firefighters from Brighouse, Cleckheaton and Elland were called to deal with the blazing vehicles.

They used one hose reel, a large water jet, four sets of breathing apparatus and a water curtain to tackle the flames.

The man was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital by ambulance for the effects of smoke inhalation. He was later discharged.

Police and fire officials were today scouring CCTV footage of the area as part of an investigation.
