AN ELECTRICITY sub-station burst into flames after copper thieves struck in Linthwaite.

Slaithwaite and Huddersfield fire crews were called to the building within the derelict Black Rock Mills on Waingate at 6.40am on Friday.

A security guard spotted the blaze in the substation as he patrolled the site and alerted the emergency services.

No-one was found inside but firefighters say the blaze started after thieves tried to steal copper wiring.

The building is now being demolished as part of plans to create new housing on the site.

No-one was injured.
