AN inquest into the death of Golcar soldier Graham Shaw, who died on active service in Afghanistan, found he was unlawfully killed.

Lance Corporal Shaw, 27, and his comrade Corporal Liam Riley, 21, were killed by separate explosions just seconds apart on foot patrol in the Babaji District, Helmand Province.

The inquest, sitting at Trowbridge Town Hall today, heard the men were walking across an area of land known as "ANA field" when they stood on two separate improvised explosive devices (IEDs) shortly after 11.30am on February 1.

His fellow comrades were told L-Cpl Shaw was suspected to be dead when Cpl Riley approached the scene, where children had previously been playing, when he too was fatally injured.

Wiltshire Coroner David Ridley today recorded a verdict of unlawful killing for both soldiers at Wiltshire Coroner’s Court.
