A HUDDERSFIELD church's members are planning special celebrations next weekend.

A concert, buffet lunch and special service to mark the 125th anniversary of Fartown Trinity Methodist Church will have the theme of Friendship.

A commemorative booklet giving the history of the church - known as the Friendly Church - and a list of past ministers has been written by senior steward and organist Andrea Crawshaw.

The Spaines Road church was opened on October 13, 1881.

In the late 1960s dry rot was discovered and the old church building was knocked down and replaced by housing.

Since then, services have been held in the Sunday school building, which was renovated at that time.

The weekend of events is being held next Saturday and Sunday.

The concert will be at 7pm on Saturday and tickets are £3. It has been arranged by Alan Woodhead.

On Sunday there will be a buffet lunch, followed by a special service at 2pm led by the minister, the Rev Leslie Jane Noon, and the Methodist circuit's superintendent minister, the Rev Paula Bee.

Jean Parker, church steward and worship leader, said the congregation numbered around 60

She said: "We have contacted as many former members as we can think of. But if anyone would like to join us they will be most welcome."
