FRIENDS of a man suffering from terminal cancer raised £6,600 for a charity that is helping him.

Gareth Robinson, from Netherton, has been helped during his illness by nurses from Macmillan Cancer Support.

A friend of the family, 24-year-old Alex Lavan, helped to organise an auction of sports memorabilia at Netherton Conservative Club which raised the wonderful amount.

She said: “It’s been a wonderful effort and I’d like to thank everyone who helped to make it so successful.’’

Father-of-three Gareth, 49, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year.

The auction, called Sports for Cancer, featured signed football shirts from Huddersfield Town, Liverpool, Everton, West Ham, Fulham and Sunderland.

A signed Arsenal team photo also went under the hammer, as well as signed Leeds Rhinos rugby league items.

Gareth’s cancer is inoperable and he has since set out to enjoy his remaining time with his family.

He and wife Helen have three children, Emma, Jade and Gareth, who also helped to organise the auction.
