A GROUP fighting to restore Greenhead Park to its past splendour has poured cold water on an ice-rink plan.

The Friends of Greenhead Park say such a scheme would be totally unworkable.

Kirklees Council is drawing up a £2.3m Lottery bid to lavish on the popular amenity just off Huddersfield's Trinity Street.

Opened in 1893, the landscape is dotted with Victorian features in poor repair.

Investment for its upkeep has been lacking for decades.

"The drains are the same as those put in 150 years ago and the pathways were put in 50 years ago," said Mr Paul Mullany, a committee member with the Friends of Greenhead Park.

He said an ice rink simply would not work.

"The idea of an open ice rink in Greenhead Park is a non-starter. It's just not a viable thing," he said.

"People are stopping us, asking when the ice rink is going to be built and where it's going to be built."

He added: "We don't want to be killjoys. We just want people to be a bit more open-eyed about it."

His group wants all the cash to go on upgrading existing structures.

They hope to see added security measures introduced including gates, railings and lighting as well as a complete overhaul of driveways and paths.

Landscaping and planting will also be a priority.

"Bid guidelines are very much about heritage so they will restore the park to its former glory.

"But I'm not saying they wouldn't get any new facilities in there."
