TESTS have begun for a radical change at Standedge Tunnel.

British Waterways is investigating using diesel rather than electric-powered towing between Marsden and Diggle.

Officials carried out atmospheric gas tests in the tunnel two weeks ago.

If the tests are successful the move would reduce the cost of taking barges through the country’s highest, longest and deepest tunnel.

But a shift to diesel would not reduce the three-hour travel time through the tunnel.

Huddersfield Canal Society chairman Neville Kenyon hopes the move will go ahead.

He said: “The current system is very expensive as it takes eight staff to bring the barges through on electric pods.

“The provisional results are positive and more tests are planned.

“The tunnel is only open two days a week at the moment, which causes frustration to boaters, who have to book in advance.”
