SATURDAY night at the movies!

There used to be a picture palace in Birkby called the Palladium. It opened its doors shortly before the outbreak of the First World War in 1914; later after the arrival of the talkies in the 1920s it was upgraded to sound.

In August, 1937, the Palladium was extended to cope with the increasing popularity of the cinema during the inter-war period.

Despite being a time of depression for some, this was a boom period for sport and leisure activities, including cinema.

The cinema spent its last years as the Carlton.
