A MAJOR fundraising drive has been launched to help Honley Male Voice Choir celebrate its 75th anniversary.

And they have received a boost with a donation of £3,000 from a benefactor to kickstart the project.

The money will be used to pay for a luxury cruise for two, which will be the first prize in a raffle being organised by the choir.

The draw will be launched on Friday, April 9, at 7.30pm at a social evening attended by choir members, relatives and supporters at the YMCA Rugby Union club at Laund Hill where there will also be a presentation by a local travel company. Tickets are £5 and include supper and entertainment by choir members.

Brian Winterbottom, chairman of the Action 75 committee which is organising events for the anniversary year, said: “We are very grateful to the supporter who has given us this very generous donation. It is their wish that their identity remains a secret and to protect their anonymity we are not saying if the person is a man or woman.

“We have nearly a year to sell the tickets and we are confident we will sell them all. The £10,000 we expect to raise will be used to help finance several events to celebrate our 75th anniversary next year, including a trip to a major musical festival, a gala concert and a dinner.”
