KIRKWOOD Hospice has a £3m appeal under way to massively renovate its services – and people are rallying to the fund- raising call.

A huge building project is under way at the site on Albany Road in Dalton which will hopefully be completed by next June.

It will feature nine en-suite single bedrooms, new three and four-bed bays and a bedroom for families wanting to remain at the hospice at night, along with a large family lounge with a kitchen and dining area.

The project will cost £3m and a special Capital Appeal has been set up to raise it.

But this is on top of the hospice’s £4.2m annual running costs – with 80% coming from fundraising and donations.

Already £600,000 has been raised towards the Capital Appeal total and work is under way with the in-patient care now transferred to Ward 11 at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary while the massive refurbishment and extension is carried out.

Former Kirklees Council Chief Executive Rob Vincent has recently become the Capital Appeal chairman and has appealed to pubs, clubs – in fact the whole Kirklees community – to rally round like it did when the hospice was originally set up 25 years ago.

People have responded and here are a list of upcoming events – some in memory of hospice patients.
