An online campaign to raise the £3,000 stolen from a pensioner has reached its target.

A bogus roofer conned Derrick Hepworth, 86, into believing he was the boss of the firm working on his Cleckheaton home.

The conman took the money pretending to go to his van for a receipt but drove off.

When genuine roofer Phil Senior found out what happened he persuaded his suppliers to cut their bills, leaving just £1,200 outstanding.

A Just Giving appeal has now raised the total and Phil’s wife Carrie said: “From the bottom of my heart I want to say a big thank you to everyone who donated. It shows there are some good people in the world.”
