Funeral details for a beloved community stalwart have been announced.

The service for Andrew Stead, who died aged 59 on November 29, will be held on December 14 at midday at St Bartholomew’s Church on Church Lane in Marsden.

Andrew’s death shocked many in Marsden where he was a performer in the Avalanche Dodgers. He was best known as the well-loved character of Fairy Ginger Nuts for the panto group, of which he was a member for 17 years.

He was also a long time member and secretary, treasurer and concert organiser of Marsden Conservative Club, trustee of the Marsden Parish Church Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society and a cross bearer at St Bartholomew’s.

It is still not known how Andrew, who was an uncle to two boys, died.

Avalanche Dodgers writer and producer, Peter Armitage, said: “It’s a tragic loss.

“He played for many years and didn’t need to do anything on stage before he was greeted with rapturous applause.

“Sometimes he didn’t even say anything at all but he was well-loved for his role.”

The service will be followed by a private cremation and then a gathering will take place at Marsden Conservative Club.

His family has asked for well wishers wanting to make a donation in memory of Andrew to between St. Bartholomew’s Church and Alzheimers Research.

A collection box will be available at the church.
